Humanitarian emergencies increase in our modern society; natural disasters, social conflicts and climate change affect our cities and environment enlarging our social vulnerability.

Università Iuav di Venezia and EAHR are partners in this post-degree Master Emergency & Resilience as a way to coordinate experiences and create better professional responses in these extreme situations that millions of people suffer each year;

Università Iuav di Venezia is worldwide recognized university of humanist architectural approach.

EAHR is a professional organization, which joins architecture and human rights.

In this perspective we search post-degree master students with high human qualities, clear work ethic approach and huge skills in professions dealing with physical response in current humanitarian challenges as architecture, planning, engineering, design, geography, social sciences, environment among others.

We are looking for the best professionals from all around the world, who wants to work in international organizations and being part of innovative and creative solutions for the humanitarian challenges of our planet in 21st century.

Post-degree master EMERGENCY & RESILIENCE has the participation of a wide number of international humanitarian institutions as UN-FAO, Red Cross, UN-HABITAT, etc.

Program Structure

ACADEMIC OBJECTIVES

A)Train professionals of architecture, planning, engineering among other to response to the new humanitarian challenges in XXI century.

B) Set up Emergency and Resilience as a discipline inside of the architecture, engineering and professional fields related to physical responses.

C) Promote new professional roles and new job opportunities for architects and other professionals in the field of humanitarian emergencies.

D) Provide a multidimensional approach to emergency situations;

  • Relief emergency (Module A) Short-term approach addressing the response in emergency crises through the immediate humanitarian relief.
  • Reconstruction (Module B) through local cultures, social participation and local economy context and specific problems attached to it.
  • Resilience (Module C) offers a long-term perspective on mitigation solutions to ensure the anticipation and preparedness for the next emergency in a sustainable and context-tailored response.

METHODOLOGY

Work system is “1 to 2” One week theoretical classes in Università Iuav di Veneziaand two/three weeks self-study and thesis research. This system allows you to continue your work and family life.

Group work is collective aptitude to train candidates to share experiences and collaboration as a key matter in humanitarian emergencies.

Workshops are the core of learning process in each module where students apply the received knowledge.

Thesis is a final task, a way to prove our new skills and show the possibility to create new knowledge in this professional field.

MODULES

Master EMERGENCY & RESILIENCE works with the Circle of Emergencies, which divide a humanitarian disaster in three levels; emergency, reconstruction and mitigation.

Last Module is internship and thesis. Internship is a way to gain professional experience and back ground. Master thesis is an academic research.

The process of reconstruction focuses in local
situation, cultural processes, low cost solutions
(timber, bamboo, bricks, adobe and SSB), debris management, water and sanitation, post-war reconstruction and local economy.

Humanitarian emergencies need long processes of mitigation to prepare for next emergency.
This process will be diverse according to the different kind of emergencies and it will be always linked to reconstruction phase. Mitigation plans enlarges resilience, the local capacity to recover for itself.

This module searches to link professional reality with academic research.

Minimum 8 work weeks in an international institution related to Humanitarian emergencies.
Internship Institutes

D2 – Thesis
It is an academic research through a specific project or case study.
Master candidate should develop a thesis based in real situations, but with academic approach.
This research should show the new professional skills of the candidate and her/his capacity to create professional new knowledge in this field of humanitarian work.

International organizations and national governments demand better architecture and planning solutions. They know that a better architectural and planning response would solve several future social problems and will decrease the economical and social investment in future catastrophes. In middle and long time perspective architecture response should be watched as the most economic solution.

Master EMERGENCY & RESILIENCE creates a professional profile with high skills in the field of humanitarian emergencies with focus in; physical planning, architecture creativity, technical innovation, cultural understanding and social capacities to work with local communities, governments and different professionals in an interdisciplinary frame.

REQUIREMENTS
To be admitted to the post-degree master course EMERGENCY  is necessary to have a five-year degree in one of the following qualifications: architecture, engineering, planning, design, art, geography, logistics, social sciences, humanist sciences, or professional title related to physical matters in human environment from an accredited university.

Applicants who have a five-year degree in other qualifications must provide evidence of work and practice in the field of humanitarian emergencies.
All the courses will be conducted in English.
If English is not your first language, you should provide one of your diploma from an institution at which English is the language of instruction, it would also be possible to submit other evidence of knowledge of English; International Baccalaureate Diploma in English, among there.
If you can not provide one of these documents you will have an online interview in English languages about professional matters.

    1. Enter the reserved area using your access credentials, or if you are not registered on the site, proceed to registration by selecting “Registration” from the menu.
      You must register your name and surname according to your passport credentials or Id card credentials.
      After completing the registration, wait at least 5 minutes before entering the reserved area
    2. Candidates that are already registered with the Website but have lost their access credentials must contact the front-office of the Didactic Area and Student Services and fax their request for credentials, together with a copy of their own valid identity document, to +39 041 2571002
    3. Select “admission test
    4. Click on “Apply to Competitions” and then select “Proceed with the process
    5. Then go to “Apply to Competition
    6. Click on “Postgraduate specialisation programmes” – level 2, and select “Next”
    7. Select EMERGENCY & RESILIENCE and follow the instructions provided by the application software.
      The application will collect all the electronic documents you have to submit (the list is down below).
      You can submit the scanned documents in several formats, (however PDF format is strongly preferred) up to max of 5MB.You must finish your electronic submission before the deadline otherwise your application will not be validated.
      When done, you will get a receipt.

You will get also the admittance bulletin fee of € 50 (the MAV).
